Having photographed Garden Mattresses II (#11837) last Saturday afternoon, I drove back past the house in the evening whereupon I found it cordoned off by the police, with the mattresses inside the cordoned off area. It is hard to see in this photo as I was a fair distance away but trust me, the police line is there and there are police to the left and right of the mattresses....

Fast?
Rebecca commented on 11.27.05
Of course not, I've never felt the need. I have, however, been known to tell hitchikers, "I'll give you a ride, but if you f*** with me I'll kill you." That seemed to keep them in line well enough. I don't pick up hitchhikers anymore though.
Salinger commented on 11.27.05
They're hard to see but there are three policemen in this photo..
wim commented on 11.26.05
I see no police, I never do as a matter of fact
DVD Dan commented on 11.26.05
Do those little cards of yours also say "don't rape me" ?
Rebecca commented on 11.26.05
I'm certainly not afraid to walk alone at night or anything, but then again you know how I am.
Rebecca commented on 11.26.05
Yeah I don't know what's up with that. Maybe it was a fluke that year, or maybe it's that more rapes are reported here, rather than kept quiet about (quite likely).
DVD Dan commented on 11.26.05
Looks like Santa Cruz is much more like a contender for Rape capital of the US.
Rebecca commented on 11.26.05
Naturally I don't want to discuss what happens once the digestive cycle is complete.
Rebecca commented on 11.26.05
I can't do the math, I just ate and my head is in my stomach.
Salinger commented on 11.26.05
Does that have any relation to the number of streetmattresses per capita
Rebecca commented on 11.25.05
Um, okay, my math skills are really rusty but it looks like we have 1 murder per 13,600 people per year, whereas you have 1 murder per every 37,500 people per year. So ours is almost three times as much. Which makes sense, considering the nature of our area as a hub for distribution of drugs coming from south of the border.
FOD40UK commented on 11.25.05
Theres 7,500 folk here in Kirkham+Wesham, and we have a murder every 5 yrs on average.
Rebecca commented on 11.25.05
I was just talking about Santa Cruz. I have repeatedly had the experience of knowing about a crime that's taken place and then not seeing it in the paper, that's how I know. I wouldn't know about the whole rest of the country (it's a pretty large place). According to cityrating.com, in 2003 Santa Cruz had a population of 54,401 and four murders. I think sometimes there's more than that though, because we have a lot of drugs here.

...and that's the rest of the story!
Salinger commented on 11.25.05
SS - there's an interesting statistics project in there somewhere. (and no, I didn't move my car around for the police, I moved it around to get #11837 to look like #834)
Smart Set commented on 11.25.05
And if you do win the lottery everyone hates you, thus greatly increasing your chances of being bumped off.
FOD40UK commented on 11.25.05
Statistically, there are about 15 murders a week in the UK (8 of these at the weekend) So we're roughly four times as likely to be murdered than to win the lottery jackpot on Saturday!!
Rebecca commented on 11.25.05
Although we have been named the "Murder Capital of the World" it's really such a misnomer.
Rebecca commented on 11.25.05
I wasn't necessarily talking about murders. Murders are also less common here, and usually make the papers.
Salinger commented on 11.25.05
Nd - incidentally, I was distinctly underwhelmed by the rest of my visit to Essex.
Smart Set commented on 11.25.05
Who is this Samrt Set?
Samrt Set commented on 11.25.05
Sounds like a criminal right enough.
Nancy Dumpling commented on 11.25.05
I have to say, my last visit to Chelmsford did provide many white shoe, tracksuit, handbag scenarios. So much for stereotypes...
Salinger commented on 11.25.05
Rebecca - murders are less common here and usually make the papers..
Salinger commented on 11.25.05
No.. but I did take a photo of a man wearing a white tracksuit and white trainers (sneakers).
Nancy Dumpling commented on 11.25.05
Yeah, yeah. Any Essex matts by the way???
Rebecca commented on 11.25.05
My experience has been that there's a lot going on that the papers don't mention. At least here there is.
Salinger commented on 11.25.05
Rebecca - I don't know. Haven't seen or heard anything in papers but you never know.
Smart Set commented on 11.25.05
But did you really have to move your car around for the police?
Salinger commented on 11.25.05
I was quite pleased with the result though.
Salinger commented on 11.25.05
ND - because the #11837 matts were in a different position to the #834 ones, it was really hard to get a shot that looked the same.
Rebecca commented on 11.25.05
Did the guy die?
Smart Set commented on 11.25.05
You're kidding!
Salinger commented on 11.25.05
Yes, it's completely true!
Nancy Dumpling commented on 11.25.05
You took 30-35 shots of the same matt?! Salinger, you have too much time on your hands!
Salinger commented on 11.25.05
It was a very exciting moment, real tension!
Smart Set commented on 11.25.05
Is any of that story true?
Rebecca commented on 11.25.05
Well at least you've got a story to tell and that's what counts!
Salinger commented on 11.25.05
Alas... alas, the chap they were looking for did not appear in any of those photographs.
Salinger commented on 11.25.05
So together, three policemen and I carefully looked through 30-35 versions of #11837 I'd taken only a few hours earlier. (it took a good 15 minutes of testing different angles and moving the car to the exact location re-create the dynamic tension so ably noted by Rebecca in #834).
Rebecca commented on 11.25.05
How disappointing. But did you?
Salinger commented on 11.25.05
"ahh yes, we know this chap" they replied. "he's not the one we're looking for. Did you photograph anyone else?"
Smart Set commented on 11.25.05
Pray continue, Mr Salinger.
Salinger commented on 11.25.05
After the initial surprise and quizzical smirkes, they set about looking through my photographs.
Rebecca commented on 11.25.05
I'm wondering too!
Salinger commented on 11.25.05
Rushing back to the scene of the crime, home of the mattresses... I wondered how I was going to explain this to the police and secondly, if this would be first ever instance of streetmattress photography solving a murder case.
Smart Set commented on 11.25.05
Go on...
Salinger commented on 11.25.05
So I pulled over, looked through all the photos I'd taken and discovered that several of them had the guy in the background.
Salinger commented on 11.25.05
As I drove away, I remembered that I'd seen someone going in and out of the house while I was photographing the mattresses earlier in the day.
Salinger commented on 11.25.05
What also happened is that I asked the police what had happened. Turns out someone who lived in the house had been stabbed and that "depending on whether he survives, determines whether this is a murder case or not."
