| I'd been matthunting in vain for weeks. Holland is such a tidy country; as if there's nothing better to do than tidy one's stoop all day and carry matts to the appropriate incinerator... I was driving along the dyke in Vechten, minding my own business, about to turn onto the Provinciale Weg toward Bunnik, when suddenly I spotted this cyclist on the parallel track. Instantly, I turned my steering wheel 180 degrees, did a break-neck five-point u-turn on the Achterdijk and with screeching tyres I pelted onto the track, in hot pursuit of the pedalling speed-devil. His bike must have had amazing gears. The car racing, my heart pounding, fingers fumbling in the glove compartment for the camera, I was terrified he might escape me, and I prayed for a miracle. Which arrived. In the form of a red light. I shuddered to a halt next to the man as my engine stalled. I turned down the window and wearing my most casual smile, waved my camera and enquired gingerly and out of breath if he'd mind if I just...? He did a double take at first and when I repeated my question, he looked behind him, as if he suspected I was talking to someone else he hadn't yet noticed. It was at this point I stole my shot, and spotting the lights had changed, raced off like a thief in broad daylight. |
