Nigel Wilson said that in the UK "soda" is carbonated water. It is, but we call it "soda water" and it is often dispensed from a "soda siphon". "Soda water" is mentioned in "Big Rock Candy Mountain".

Why are you mad over 2 pop cans

dirty steve commented on 11.29.03
from the start i knew what pop cans wre but i wanted to see what responce i got and it was a good one.

dirty steve commented on 11.29.03
rebecca you are right, it is interesting discussion.

Rebecca commented on 11.28.03
Just saw your email.

wim commented on 11.28.03
sorry no time

Rebecca commented on 11.28.03
It's my new pet name for you. No, silly, I was talking to Steve, not you. But I'll talk to you if you like.

wim commented on 11.28.03
I must have missde you by a minute, why call me Steve?

Rebecca commented on 11.28.03
Why, Steve? It's an interesting discussion with a great map. And this humble mattress is getting more fame than it ever did when it was a "good" mattress, staying off the streets in somebody's bedroom.

wim commented on 11.28.03
hey dan, I guess it is "incoke" and not "uncoke" as one takes it in. As for the map on the site, it looks like a howling dog with someone nasty sitting on its back.

dirty steve commented on 11.28.03
i am sorry asked about "pop cans"

Rebecca commented on 11.28.03
I often refer to them as "carbonated beverages." I talk like that, just because I can I guess.

Nigel Wilson commented on 11.27.03
It is great to see the soda/pop/coke debate is still active. To add an international dimension, soda is not coke, rather carbonated water. Another name for these drinks usually by kids is fizzy pop, not just pop. The World is a colourful and wonderful place.

DVD Dan commented on 11.27.03
Maybe they order an uncoke.

Rebecca commented on 11.27.03
Exactly, apparently these people call all carbonated beverages "Coke." It's hard to understand. Look at the map - it's apparently a southern thing.

Salinger commented on 11.27.03
point is, if you use the word 'coke' to refer to a generic fizzy soft drink, how do you specify your desire for a fizzy soft drink that is not Coke, if you form a sentence that requires both?

Kevin37uk commented on 11.27.03
Rebecca, what is it about Coke folks you don't understand? I like Coke. However I don't like Pepsi. Oh no I hope this doesn't turn into a Coke/Pepsi war on StreetMattress.

ChristineLarsen commented on 11.27.03
I agree, Rebecca. When they order, do they say, "Give me a Coke, and make it a Dr. Pepper"????? I also don't understand the "other" crowd. What in the heck do they call it? This whole picture is making me thirsty.

Rebecca commented on 11.27.03
What a beautiful map that is! It's really interesting to see the lines of division. It's the "Coke" folks that I don't understand.

Rotten Scalyfish commented on 11.27.03
Thanks for that link, Christine...what a fantastic website!

ChristineLarsen commented on 11.27.03
Go to this web site. It's narrowed down the pop/soda confusion nearly to the county!!http://www.popvssoda.com/countystats/total-county.html

Rebecca commented on 11.26.03
Jeff says "soda" now.

Rotten Scalyfish commented on 11.26.03
Being a California native now living in Washington with parents from the Midwest I can tell you what I've obsereved: Midwesterners and Northwesterners alike commonly use the word "pop" or "soda-pop"...Californians rarely do, opting for simply "soda", unless raised by Midwesterners. Once peer pressure takes over, however, one's term for carbonated soft drinks rapidly metamorphizes.

Rebecca commented on 11.26.03
Jeff says it was "pop" when he was growing up in Seattle. I wouldn't have thought there'd be any difference between California and there.

dirty steve commented on 11.26.03
thanks kids

DVD Dan commented on 11.26.03
I think I called it (as a kid)Soda as well, or soda-pop. And I'm a left coaster.

Rebecca commented on 11.26.03
You know, I've read the same thing but I've always called it "soda."

ChristineLarsen commented on 11.26.03
Part of the way you can tell where someone is from in the U.S. is what they call the carbonated drink. In my neck o' the woods, they call it "pop" but I know people from the east coast that say "soda" and some even just refer to it all as "Coke."

Nigel Wilson commented on 11.25.03
Pop cans = soft drinks cans, coke, sprite etc....

dirty steve commented on 11.25.03
pop cans?
