This was a common practise in most of our older towns and cities in the UK.We used stone slabs and cobbles pre-concrete(portland cement,1824)to pave around corners-hence the notched kerbs.I suppose this is something we shipped out to you in the colonies(tho as the West was still relitavely wild at this time,I expect we didn't do much paving across the US 'till after this time)

That is how they bend it around curves. Like the apron on a table.
