This is a mattress decorating the base of the Wharncliffe Viaduct, which was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and erected around 1836 to take the railway over the Brent Valley. It cost £40,000 to build and was named after Lord Wharncliffe. It is 300 yards long and 65 feet high. It is rumoured that Queen Victoria used to stop the royal train so she could admire the views of dumped mattresses.

I suppose mattresses were made of wood in those days, or iron, perhaps.

I suppose in '36 she was still a young and impressionable princess(17).Little did she realise that within a year she would be the next Queen of England, and be made to cast aside any childish fanciful notions of becoming a matt-hunter.
