A shy nightstreetmattress - 09.11.02
submitter: Frank Compernolle
location:In front of Saint-Servais Church, Liège, Province of Liège, Belgium
I never could imagine it was so difficult to catch a mattress at night. This one was particularly shy, I didn't use flashlight as I didn't want to frighten it. Indeed, when I came back by daylight, it was gone.

I'm so glad you didn't startle it by flashing your camera. Poor little thing. I hope it found its way home ok.

This is actually a mattress from the religious order know as "The Mattress's of the devine incarnation". The order was started in the 80's by Tammy Fay Baker as a spin-off to her husbands evangelist dealings. These mattressi leave their churches at night and roam the streets looking for the homeless and giving them some where to sleep. They are mostly seen around back alleys wearing white or yellow sheets. Unfortunatlety many are also scared with remnants of Tammy's make-up - I can almost make out a slight mascarra swipe on this one.

Ah yes Frank, the rare Belgian nocturnal mat--you were lucky to see it at all.
