Why did the mattress cross the road? - 08.23.05
submitter: Mad Dan Eccles
location:Benejofar, Spain
I have waited a long time for my first submission to this site. This just seemed the perfect composition: In the foreground - English bloke pointing out the mattress which has almost crossed the road; In the middleground - lots of Spanish concrete and in the background - the traditional Spanish restaurant, "The Big Chippy". All positive comments appreciated - thanks.

how come I missed this conversation? almost 4 years ago and still in full, actuality, the helples hands of a big loner, his feet right on the line, and traffic as if it never existed

Salinger commented on 10.03.05
Dan, MC coming up in Oslo, London, Madrid and Melbourne....

Mad Dan commented on 09.30.05
Wouldn't be here if we weren't sad would we? Sad and proud of it, that's me!

noel commented on 09.28.05
Sad Men?

Salinger commented on 09.28.05
Mad Dan - yes yes yes. of course I remember. Am glad you're hooked. Ranghild needs some help moving Norway up the rankings. Now both you and Gunnbjoerg can help! Brilliant! SS - not a spawn... Ragnhild, Gunnbjoerg and I met Dan after dancing at the Mobile Club in Oslo and then we went drinking with him. Gunnbjoerg pretended she had somewhere more interesting to go and the three of us who were left went for dinner. And now we're all on SM!

Nancy Dumpling commented on 09.27.05
Ahhh, you can tell you are a true pro, SS. I aspire to have your knowledge on such matt(ress)ers.

Another example is V3's #8826 and #8893 where he's forgotten that he already photographed a skip. Nothing has changed from a mattress point of view, so one should really go. Then of course you've got the "story" sequences like wim or ART's 4-pic car chase across a Greek(?) city and pb's 4-pic Citroen-DS-matt-goes-into-the-crusher sequence. I'm probably arguing against myself here, because these were all knowingly accepted by Adam or Noonan. I suppose all it proves is that the "10,000th Mattress" is always going to be an inaccurate title.

Rebecca commented on 09.27.05
Oh, I see. Yes then, I'd agree.

Smart Set commented on 09.27.05
I agree with you, Rebecca, but you've misunderstood. By "identical" I mean pics that a submitter has accidentally submitted twice. e.g the three by Maarten V. that he recently sent again after two years and are still in his showcase, and perhaps the recent Ragnhild/Salinger joint effort. There's an identical pb one, too, and probably more. Together they throw the mattress counter out by at least five.

Rebecca commented on 09.27.05
I disagree - each submitter independently undertook the act of photographing a streetmattress and produced a picture. I think those are valid submissions and each stands on its own.

ART commented on 09.27.05
ART's pipeline : about 30, not much but a small contribution to reach 10.000

Smart Set commented on 09.27.05
Perhaps we should weed out some of the identical submissions first, otherwise the title "10,000th Mattress" will be merely an honorary one.

Nancy Dumpling commented on 09.27.05
I tend to agree with that...

Rebecca commented on 09.27.05
I really think we ought to go by the Mattress Counter though.

Rebecca commented on 09.27.05
I think the person who submits number 10,000 should get some sort of special prize. Maybe we could all chip in and get them a new mattress.

Smart Set commented on 09.27.05
So Mad Dan Eccles is another Spawn of Salinger.

Vogon3 commented on 09.26.05
and if had not taken matt pics when i was on holiday in the US we would have already done that.

Smart Set commented on 09.26.05
Another landmark soon to be eclipsed is the USA+US total of 3276. UK+Scotland+Wales+UAE=3257, just 19 behind.

Smart Set commented on 09.26.05
After I've submitted today's haul later on, I'll have 128 in the pipeline.

noel commented on 09.26.05
that is on the enries counter. Would you think they have 500 entries tucked away?

noel commented on 09.26.05
My waiting entries alone would make up to way over the 10000 mark

Mad Dan commented on 09.26.05
Salinger, remember me? - Mobile clubbing in Norway - you hooked me you bugger! MD

Salinger commented on 09.26.05
I'm equally convinced they're in possession of Mattress #10,000! Perhaps we should start planning the celebrations?

ART commented on 09.26.05
and i'm convinced that nr 10000 on the counter above is already defined, it's already in the possesion of Adam/Noonan but has to be approved and put on the net

Salinger commented on 09.26.05
The Matt number in the URL (here #9977) is total number of submissions when the matt was submitted. The Matt counter is the number of matts that have been approved by Mattress Gods.

Nancy Dumpling commented on 09.26.05
23 based on the actual matt numnbers but why is the mattress counter wrong? I guess this is a bit of a beginners' question?

Salinger commented on 09.26.05
23 more submissions until 10,000th submission

Nancy Dumpling commented on 09.26.05
No I do not want his telephone number you saucy devil! And I don't know what the numbers refer to....? I hope we have more days left than that too!!!

Mad Dan commented on 09.26.05
Hi Nancy, Noooo It's not me. Do you want his telephone number? MD p.s. Is Noel a person or is it a count-down to Xmas, coz I hope we have more days left than that!

noel commented on 09.26.05
sorry 23, my computer can't spell nor count

noel commented on 09.26.05
33 to go

Nancy Dumpling commented on 09.26.05
Welcome Mad Dan! Nice exasperated hands don't match smily, happy pleased with mattress find face! Is that you or a different English bloke?

Mad Dan commented on 09.26.05
Thanks for the comment! Mad Dan was of course not made up by me but by the great Spike Milligan who not doubt would have loved this site.

Smart Set commented on 09.26.05
The question in your title has been asked before (see #1341), but there have benesofar no answers.

Smart Set commented on 09.26.05
Welcome, MDE, aka 2nd Dan. What made you mad? Was it the lack of mattresses in Spain?
